Social Studies

  1. Chart the history of fire fighting in this country.
  2. Compare early methods of fire fighting (bucket brigades) with modern methods of fire fighting (fire trucks and rescue teams).
  3. Visit a fire station.
  4. Discuss a fire station as performing services to the community.
  5. Locate other community services on a local map.
Phys Ed
  1. Play an outdoor, team game called "Rescue".
  2. Form the class into four equal teams.
  3. Have "it" rescue one team member from a burning building by bringing that member back to a safety zone.
  4. Repeat the rescue (with the newly rescued team member as "it") until all team members have been rescued.
  5. The team to complete their mission first wins.
Art
  1. Students work in teams of two to four to draw a chalk mural of Jack and Jill's adventure.
  2. Draw the mural as a four part sequence of the story.
  3. Display the mural in the room or hallway.
Technology Ed
  1. Students think of a way to carry a 5-gallon pail of water down a hill without spilling it.
  2. Students work in teams of four to six to solve the problem.
  3. Allow children to form a bucket brigade to water a nearby tree.
  4. Discuss how technology has changed from the bucket brigade to the firehose.
Mathematics
  1. Use liquid measurement to compare "how much" water Jack and Jill can carry down the hill in a cup, pint, quart, and gallon container.
  2. Discuss which container is the most useful for Jack and Jill's purpose.
Science
  1. Discuss "why" water is used to extinguish most fires.
  2. Have a fire fighter demonstrate how hoses are used to fight fires today.
  3. Role play Jack and Jill while children sing the nursery rhyme tune.
Music
  1. Set the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill to music using Karlie Simon's nursery rhyme music.
  2. Clap, snap, and stomp to establish the beat to the tune.
  3. Role play Jack and Jill while children sing the nursery rhyme tune.
Language Arts
  1. Read the nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill."
  2. Ask: "How did Jack and Jill try to get water and why?"
  3. Discuss solutions on how Jack and Jill could get down the hill without tumbling.
  4. Sequence the rhyme into what happened first, second,and third.
  5. Compose an original ending to the rhyme with "Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of _______________________."
Health
  1. Discuss health concerns with fire safety.
  2. Demonstrate "stop, drop, and roll", a technique used when fire is present in the home.
  3. Discuss how fire fighters use hoses instead buckets brigades today.
